Highlands High School National Honor Society students hosted the fourth annual Spring Sanity event on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 8:30 AM to 11 AM at Highlands High School. This event was the culmination of a year-long campaign to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and making a child's dream come true. This year, NHS is close to $9,000 in donations, which can make two children's wishes come true!
Spring-Sanity is a school-wide event that pairs dodgeball teams against each other in an all-out, fight to the finish tournament with bragging rights and trophies at the end of the competition. Students and faculty also purchased tickets to "The Mane Event," with the winner of the raffle being the person selected to shear the overgrown beard of teacher MIchael Santucci. The event also featured a Senior Class versus Faculty lip sync battle!
Twenty one teams registered for the day's event, making a donation to Make A Wish through team sign-ups. Teams crafted names, created uniforms and one by one narrowed down to the championship round of Team #Winning and Team Division 3 Ballers. Team Division 3 Ballers won the final round and took the medals home.
This is the fourth year that Spring Sanity has been a major charitable campus event, starting in 2013 with sumo wrestling, faculty dodgeball and student dodgeball. Past beneficiaries have been the Highlands Relay for LIfe in memory of teacher Roselynn Stanzione in 2013 and again for the Relay in honor of students battling cancer in 2014. In 2015, NHS selected Make A Wish Foundation to raise funds for and the organization will again this year be the beneficiary.
NHS consists of students nominated to the academic club based on character, academics and achievements. This year's sponsor is Jordan Thompson, with the assistance of Sherry Armstrong and Melinda Eckenrod.
